Welcome to Whidbey’s Nonprofit Directory

This directory is a free community resource created by the Whidbey Community Foundation to connect residents and donors with the many organizations serving our island. Inclusion does not imply endorsement or funding, and not all organizations listed are WCF grantees. We strive to keep information current and accurate. Island Strings

Island Strings

Promoting Stringed Instrument Education across Whidbey Island

Island Strings is creating opportunities and access to stringed instrument education for Whidbey Island students of violin, viola, cello and double bass. Stringed instrument education is missing from Whidbey Island public schools, and local families struggle to find opportunities for their children to study strings in a group setting (and many do not have the means to pursue any form of education that is not offered in their public school). To meet that need, Island Strings is developing small group classes for beginners, offered on a sliding tuition scale; accepts donations of instruments (and funds to repair those instruments) to loan to families in-need; and has established the Linda Good Music Scholarship Fund in order to extend merit awards and financial aid to deserving students.

Island Strings is a sponsored program of the Whidbey Island Arts Council, a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization (91-1147736)

History

Founded in 1974
Island Strings was founded in 1974 by Linda Good, Paula Pugh, and Linda Morris, who shared an artistic vision that brought the joy of strings education to the children of Whidbey Island. Upon Linda Good’s retirement in May 2023, violinist Cynthia Albers assumed the leadership role with the dual objectives of honoring the Island Strings legacy and expanding its reach. Today, Island Strings joins with other organizations to address the lack of strings instruction in school programs, and faces the important task of introducing violin-family instruments to Whidbey students, assisting families in acquiring instruments, and promoting and fostering string ensembles led by Whidbey Island instructors.

In March 2024, coinciding with its 50th anniversary, Island Strings became a sponsored program of the Whidbey Island Arts Council and established the Linda Good Music Scholarship Fund, thereby ensuring that the founders’ vision and passion for music education will endure for generations to come.
